JANINE DUNN
Dunn is an artist and farmer living in Gibsons, BC, who shares stories of daily life on her farm through painting. She draws on personal impressions of motherhood, animal husbandry, degradation and repair, shared labour and hospitality, and isolation and solitude. Her paintings are suffused with people, animals, plants, rural architecture, machinery and tools, making space for the work of dreams, symbols and archetypes to filter her narrative impulses. Working with industrial, agricultural and domestic materials, she collaborates with the weather and elements to develop her canvases.

I seek to illustrate symbolic dimensions of Celebration, Abundance and Scarcity. Ancient practices in many faiths, Fasting can be a spiritual discipline that develops humility and empathy, while Feasting is grateful festival. Looking at sustenance from another angle, we are faced with our modern condition of food insecurity, inflation, and nutritional deficits.
As a member of a local farming family who sells produce on the Sunshine Coast, and as someone seeking to draw nearer to God, I take the chance to contemplate these themes each day, and translate them into images of the modern agrarian.
This particular body of work was made as a nursing mother during my third child’s first year of life.
